Club Split tables tournament
Tushinghams storm to victory!!
The club held its annual Christmas tournament on Tuesday night. This year it was decided to play 'split table' - normal table tennis rules but the net is removed and the two halves of the table are pulled apart by two metres - this allows for more equal game play between all abilities.
23 juniors fought it out in groups of three, playing best of three games up to 11 points, with the top two in each group going through to the knock out competition. All the experienced players made it to the final 16 but competition favourite Sam Richards was knocked out in the first round by Hannah Sharpe. Matthew Wellington and Ross Buckler were casualties of round two, new player Conall Jackson played exceptionally well but was knocked out in round three. The final game between Hannah Sharpe and Yannick Tushingham was hard fought but Yannick secured the match winning two games in a row 11-6 and 11-5.
14 adults with mixed table tennis abilities played in the knock out competition. With all the seeded players going through to the semi finals, except for club chairman Howard Back who lost in round two to Giles Tushingham. Martin Atkin beat Paul Humphries to go through to the finals and Giles Tushingham beat club coach Mike Naylor. The final was hard fought but Giles won two straight games 11-4 and 11- 6 to win.
